Summons Ceremony   in "Black Night"

Now... I will tell you all about the Metal Resistance...

This was the world where the overwhelming magic of the big power "Idols"
controlled everything such as mass media, politics, economy.
All music other than idol songs were seen as harmful,
and the Metal was no exception.

The prayer of the apostles who wished the restoration of the Metal
reached the Fox God who is in charge of the Metal,
and the Fox God named the three girls:
SU-METAL, YUIMETAL & MOAMETAL
as "BABYMETAL" which means the birth of a new metal
whose theme is "the fusion of the idols and the Metal"
and sent them down to this world.

In order to get the true Metal,
the Fox God gave BABYMETAL many trials.

All were unknown worlds to them.
The girls who didn't know the true Metal had no way
but to stand up to the trials, believing their own power.
Though they were young, they pushed forward on the way without a path
and changed many given trials into legends one after another,
and people were touched to see that.

The clock hands have begun to move.
The Metal spirit has brought new breath to this land.
The national maestro who is powerful in the mass media
and, at last, the members of the big power Idols
have raised the fox signs which are the symbols of the Metal Resistance.

The Metal spirit has turned into the crimson flame,
has changed the jet-black darkness into a white night,
and, like the sun that doesn't set,
keeps on radiating the vivid crimson light.

The Fox God tells BABYMETAL:
"The first chapter of the Metal Resistance has been completed in this land.
Then, to send up a new signal fire, leaving this land, I summon you to a new world.
The time has come. Now we will advance to foreign lands."

[Summons]
Doomsday time has come.
It is time to depart.

Scream and dance, MOAMETAL,
scream and dance, YUIMETAL,
and, vocal and dance, SU-METAL.
You must leave now.
It is time to depart.

In two-thousand and ten, BABYMETAL was formed
at the root of the theme: Kawaii Metal.
The meaning is the mixture of J-pop idols and Heavy Metal.
BABYMETAL is receiving attention of all over the world.
They are on the road of the one and only.
BABYMETAL say good-bye to Japan...

[i] About the Chapters of the Metal Resistance

In the concert of 2015 Jan. 10th, it was said the third chapter of the Metal Resistance had begun, so the second chapter began in 2014 March (just after "Black Night") and ended in 2014 December (or just before the moment when "Road of Resistance" was performed in London on 2014 Nov. 8th).

Chaptering, however, shouldn't be taken so seriously. Saying "what ended is actually the first chapter" is alright, but, in the epilogue for "Red Night", it was said as if "Black Night" was the last chapter of the Metal Resistance. The stories narrated in BABYMETAL's concerts contain some discrepancies and advance hints which have been unsolved & forgotten, so there may be no such big difference of BABYMETAL's activity between in 2014 and in 2015 as between in 2013 and in 2014.

[ii] About "召喚" (Shookan; Summons)

It is ambiguous who is to leave this land (= kono chi o hanare). Grammatically (in Japanese), it should be taken as "I (= the Fox God) leave this land and order you to come to a new world". However, leaving this land is unfit to the Fox God because god is anywhere and god is nowhere. Contextually, it is better to take it as "I order you to leave this land and to come to a new world".

Since there is no image of someone calling from over there and the Fox God says "now we will advance", it may look like a departure ceremony rather than a summons ceremony, but it can be said BABYMETAL were summoned by fans in Europe & North America.

Notes

  1. "Kyodai seiryoku 'Aidoru'" (= the Big Power "Idols") refers to AKB group (including AKB48, SKE48, NMB48, etc). Rumor say the ruler of AKB group Yasushi AKIMOTO conspires with an Ad & PR company Dentsu. Dentsu is a gulliver company, and the Japanese government often commissions the PR to them. These conspiracy theories are alleged because the Japanese mass media often favor or ignore someones unnaturally.
  2. These two lines of the translation don't correspond line by line to the transcription but reversed.
  3. The antecedent of "whose" is "a new Metal".
  4. English narration "the mixture of J-pop idols and Heavy Metal" comes later. "融合" (yuugoo; fusion) and "混合" (kongoo; mixture) are usually distinguished in Japanese. "Yuugoo" means the unifying of fused things, not a mere mixture of things.
  5. The images of BABYMETAL's concerts are displayed on the screen: Legend "I" on 2012 Oct. 6th, Legend "D" on 2012 Dec. 20th, Legend "Z" on 2013 Feb. 1st, "May Revolution" in 2013 May (a famous picture, a funny man, & an emblem flying in the night sky), Legend "1999" on 2013 Jun. 30th, Summer Sonic 2013 a.k.a. "Tenka-ichi Budookai" (= the Metal Martial Arts Tournament for the Strongest under Heaven) on 2013 Aug. 10th&11th, Loud Park 2013 on 2013 Oct. 20th, Legend "1997" on 2013 Dec. 21st, Live in Singapore on 2013 Dec. 28th (Merlion), and Live in Taipei with ChthoniC (a Taiwanese metal band) on 2014 Feb. 2nd (during Chinese New Year / a devil?).
  6. "The national maestro" refers to a famous comedian Tamori who is the MC of a famous TV program "Music Station". He is not a professional musician but has a good knowledge of music and plays the trumpet.
  7. On 2014 Feb. 7th, BABYMETAL, AKB48 & others appeared on Music Station. Then the fox sign was explained, and the MC & most guests made the fox signs. It is a common practice for the MC & the guests of Music Station to be friendly to young guests (and WATANABE Mayu of AKB48 was a fan of Sakura Gakuin & BABYMETAL since before), but some fans said like "since the members of AKB48 raised the fox signs, the Metal Resistance is complete".
  8. "Noroshi o ageru" (= to send up a signal fire) seems to have become the idiom which means "to make an action that becomes the beginning of a big movement".
  9. It might mean "Now let's advance to foreign lands!", but I think such tone is unfit to the Fox God.
  10. It seems to be not "the new" but "the meaning". I fixed the transcription on 2017 May 29 (thanks to Fernando san no 2017 May 27).
  11. I couldn't hear this line well. Anonymous san on 2015 Mar. 31st and on 2015 Apr. 20th suggested this. (Appended on 2015 Aug. 19th. Sorry for late update.)
  12. About the meaning of this line, see note [i] of Epilogue for "Black Night".

[Doomsday
Summons]
On the night when the crimson flame burns down everything
and this land is enveloped by the jet-black darkness,
finally the time of fate comes,
towards the end of the Metal Resistance...

On the morning of the day when they depart for the new stage,
like the sound of a small bell gradually changes into the sound of a big bell,
BABYMETAL are going to be summoned into the giant magic circle.

The Fox God said
"Because there is an end, there is a beginning".
And then the sound of the bell that tells the end of the Metal Resistance
and tells the opening of the new legend
resounds from the giant magic circle.
Long ago, the Godmother who is the mother of the Fox God said
"It is you who shall ring that gong".

[i] About Summons Ceremony

Exactly speaking, this is the prologue for the encore of "Black Night". BABYMETAL performed "Doki Doki * Morning" & "Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!" as encore. At the end of "Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!", SU-METAL rang the gong, and the picture story for the summons ceremony started.

Though it was clearly said in the epilogue for Legend "1997" that the Fox God would summon BABYMETAL on Black Night, fans could not understand what it really meant. Some fans guessed the backing band would become the official members of BABYMETAL, some fans guessed some girl(s) would join BABYMETAL. Probably no fan would expect such a "summons".

Notes

  1. "Suzu" refers (usually) to a bell that has a roughly spherical shape and pellet(s) inside. It is typically small (e.g. a jingle bell), but there are big suzu in Japanese shrines. "Kane" refers usually to a bell-shaped bell which is typically large. Grammatically it would be better to understand as "the small sound of suzu (= small bell) gradually changes into the big sound of kane (= large bell)".
  2. The word "Godmother" is used only to refer to a singer Akiko WADA a.k.a. "Goddo Neechan" (= God (Older) Sister), and her most famous song (1972) is titled "Ano Kane o Narasu no wa Anata" (= It Is You Who Shall Ring That Bell). She has no relation with the Fox God & BABYMETAL.
Now she is famous as a bitter commentator in TV shows, but she is a good soulful singer. This song has been covered by many singers. Its lyrics are like: "I am happy to meet you. / You have a smell of hope. / Though failing, getting hurt and crying, / there is a refreshing smell of hope. / The city is now in sleep. / It is you who shall ring that bell. / People are all in worry. / It is you who shall ring that bell." It is often sung to cheer up people in difficulty, and I wish my translation with "shall" taken in such a way.

[i] About the Rareness of This Song

Except the cover songs that were performed only once for members' birthday celebration, BABYMETAL have performed almost all their repertoire at the time on every their solo concert. The exceptions are two: "Kimi to Anime ga Mitai" which is a cover song and has not been performed in Europe & USA., and this song which has been performed only twice (as of 2015 March).

In the cyber city "A-KIBA",
seeing the latest movie of "Happy Grape Man", their favorite anime,
YUIMETAL and MOAMETAL got very excited.
They were impressed with "Happy Grape Man" which was full of yahman and love & peace,
and, absorbed in chatting, they kept walking.
Then the onion shining on the roof...
No. From the building on the roof of which the grapes were set,
the song of 4ppiness was heard.
What! There stands the real Grape Man!
"If you show me true reggae, I will give you true '4ppiness'!"
When they have eaten the "happy grape" Grape Man has given them,
saying "Give me, 4! Give me, 4!",
they change into BLACK BABYMETAL
and start "Begging Operation" unintentionally...

ROMAJI TRANSCRIPTION AND NOTES ARE BELOW.

[i] About Anpanman

Budô Man (= Grape Man) is a parody of Anpanman. Anpanman is a hero of a picture book (& anime) series written by Takashi YANASE (1919-2013). Ever since 1980's, Anpanman is very popular among Japanese young children (< 6 y.o.).

Anpan is a sweet bun (bread) filled with red bean paste. Anpanman's head is made of anpan. When he notices a starving person or animal, he offers them his own head to eat. If it is (partially) eaten, he gets weaker. When necessary, the baker Uncle Jam replaces his head with new anpan. He doesn't try to destroy his enemy Baikinman (= (Bad) Bacteria Man) but only to stop Baikinman's evildoing.

Anpanman's character comes from the author's wartime experience. People in many countries suffered from starvation during & after the World War II, and the justice he had been taught to believe was no longer justice after Japan's surrender, so he came to think true justice is not to destroy the enemies of justice but to save people from starvation and disaster. And Baikinman's character symbolizes the bad side of human nature.

The author thought these were difficult for such young children to understand, and many adults complained eating the head is too shocking, but young children love Anpanman, and his act becomes an opportunity for them to think about the meaning of self-sacrifice. Since Budô Man offers YUIMETAL & MOAMETAL a part of his head though they are in no trouble, I'm afraid 'he' may not understand the theme of Anpanman.

Notes

  1. "A-KIBA" (pronounced as "eikiba") suggests the area of Akihabara a.k.a. "Akiba".
  2. The phrase "daisuki na anime" (= their favorite anime) appears in the first part, but it modifies "Shiawase no Budoo Man" (= Happy Grape Man) in the second part. I'm sorry I've missed this phrase. I inserted it on 2017 May 27 (thanks to Fernando san on 2017 May 21).
  3. "Yahman" (= yeah, man) is a Jamaican word which means "alright" or something positive. It seems to be used by reggae music fans all over the world.
  4. It is about 2.5km distance from Akihabara to Budôkan.
  5. This line is borrowed from the song "Ookina Tamanegi no Shita de" (= Under the Big Onion) by a Japanese rock band "Bakufu Slump", 1985. They saw Budôkan and wrote the song because, on the top of the roof, there is a Japanese traditional ornament "giboshi" which looks like an onion.
  6. The grammatical structure of these three lines is: Then the song of happiness was heard from the building on whose roof not a onion (which was sung to be shining on the roof) but a bunch of grapes was set.
  7. The building on the screen is Budôkan, and "budô" (= grape) is a pun with "Budôkan" (= the Hall for Martial Arts).
  8. "4awase" is read as "shiawase" (= happiness) because "4" is read as "shi", so please read "4ppiness" as "fouppiness" meaning "happiness".
  9. This sentence is read as "choodai yon" ("yon" is another reading of "4"). "Yo" is a sentence-ending particle to emphasize the sentence, and it is rarely and playfully pronounced "yon", so the sentence means only "(please) do give me", but it sounds somewhat meaning "give me 4" because the form of "yon" is rare.

[i] About "The Time Left"

BABYMETAL started as one of the sub groups of Sakura Gakuin. At the end of Legend "Z" in 2013, two months before Miss Suzuka graduated from Sakura Gakuin, Amuse Inc. announced the "limited-time" extension of BABYMETAL's activity, but the ending time was not announced.

Towards the Budokan concerts, 'he' again suggested as if BABYMETAL ended at Budokan on several occasions. Many fans didn't take it seriously, but some fans thought it could happen because it becomes both idol groups and rock bands to disband at the height of their activity. All fans expected some (shocking) announcement should come at the end of "Black Night".

Towards the end of March 2015, 'he' did no such suggestion though it is the time for Miss Moa & Miss Yui to graduate from Sakura Gakuin and so it is more likely than March 2014.

Fruitpochette “The Crest of Evil” album review.

The birth and rise in popularity of Kawaii metal in the last few years brought us a few unique bands that represent the genre really well.

FRUITPOCHETTE

Besides the obvious Babymetal, Fruitpochette is in my opinion one of the bands that best represent what it’s all about; heavy music accompanied by beautiful or catchy melodies and cute sounding vocals. So far, the band has always managed to deliver material that’s compelling, fresh and hard hitting.

Shippu Jinrai / FRUITPOCHETTE
FRUITPOCHETTE

Before I tackle this review I’ll give you a bit of background on my personal experience with the band. I discovered them mid 2014 through an article on this website. I listened to a few samples on Amazon Japan which won me over and convinced me to give Shippu Jinrai, the band’s first mini album, a try. I had no idea they would become one of my favorite bands in recent years. I have always had varied musical taste, ranging from really cheesy pop stuff, to just about the most brutal music out there. I’m weird like that. Maybe that’s part of what made me love Kawaii metal so much. Having a strong preference for beautiful melodies accompanied by intense and powerful riffs really made me fall hard for Fruitpochette’s first effort. The album’s 7 songs all highlight these qualities to varying degrees.

The first time I heard “Parasite”, “Fantastic” and “Chocolate bits”, I knew those were very special songs that I would be humming along for many years to come, and probably to some extent for the rest of my life. So, as you can imagine, my expectations for “The Crest of Evil” were sky high.

If you’re at all familiar with the band, I would say the album is pretty much what you would expect. For the most part, there are no big surprises here. Despite the Jpop/Metal attributes people always use to refer to them, they have always been much closer to Metal than anything else and this album reflects that pretty faithfully. Heavy and complex guitars, fast drums, tempo changes, intense solos, accompanied by synthesizers and clean vocals which serve to embellish the whole and really bring in the melodic aspect of their music.

Even though I think very highly of the album now, for some reason it took me a few listens to warm up to it. Some albums you just connect with right away, while others require a bit more time, but this doesn’t necessarily change how you feel once you’ve had time to properly take them in. The first time I listened to it I felt it was decent but I was by no means blown away by it. I listen to so much music nowadays it’s becoming hard for me to be blown away by any album on my first listen. It was around the third time where it really clicked with me.

The people writing the band’s material should be applauded for so unabashedly creating music that is either very heavy, or very melodic. You can tell by the complexity of the riffs and arrangements that a whole lot of work went into the creation of those songs. I only have one complaint about the song writing itself. You see, many Japanese record labels choose to hire different song writers to create the material for the bands they manage. This has the benefit of being able to select the very best songs produced by their song writers, and it also adds a lot of variety to the music itself due to it having been created by different people. My knowledge of Japanese is very limited so I can’t verify this but you can tell that the album in its entirety is written by the same group of people. As a result, when you listen to the album from beginning to end, you sense a certain familiarity between the songs and toward the end, I felt like I had heard all of the song writers’ proverbial “bag of tricks”. Minor complaint. Trust me, if you enjoy their music, you won’t be bothered by this but it is still worth mentioning.

The Crest Of Evil / FRUITPOCHETTE
FRUITPOCHETTE

Of the 13 songs on Crest of Evil, I felt that 8 or 9 of them were faithful to what we’ve come to know the band for. The rest are a bit of a departure. I’m not referring to the quality in any way here. I’m simply saying that it’s nice that the song writers made an effort to create something different and not simply do a repeat of their previous material. The album at its core is high energy Heavy metal with some very fast parts and many melodic pieces. The songs that showcase this are amazing and for those alone the record is worth it in my opinion.

“Drop” and “Paradox” start the record in a big way and, provided you’re a fan of Fruitpochette, will remind you why you love this band so much. High energy songs that don’t waste any time getting this point across. “Advance” is a pretty standard Metal song. There’s nothing too surprising or original about it but it has great guitars and strong vocals. “DieOut” stands out compared to the rest of the album. It is significantly less heavy so it might not be for everyone but I personally feel it’s great that they were willing to explore different sounds. Its chorus is also pretty great. Solid song.

“Happiness” is incredibly good in just about every way. From its awesome intro with amazing guitars to its really catchy chorus, it is one wild ride from beginning to end. It represents in my opinion the very best Fruitpochette has to offer. Could be the best song on the record. “Action” is very, very good. Another fast and intense song that highlights the band’s signature sound. Its incorporation of different sounds works and really fits the song.

“SheerMadness” starts off slow but the song really shines when it reaches the chorus. Beautiful guitar solos as well. “Deadly” stands out for its melody. Beautiful guitars, synth and vocals. Also packs quite a punch. Another great song. “Lacus” marks another departure from the rest of the record. It is more of a moody song and it incorporates different sounds like clean piano, violin and other softer synthesizer sounds. It works. The girls also deliver a great performance on this one.

I’ve kept the songs that I considered less impressive for the end. “CleverDick” has pretty good guitars but I felt it didn’t do anything special plus the vocals and the melody are somewhat forgettable. Strange that they chose this track for the album’s first MV. Maybe I’m in the minority with this opinion? Just about the only thing “Vainglory” has going for it is a nice little chorus. The rest of the song is a little dull and unsurprising. Guitars and Drums are pretty standard. The synths sound they chose sound close to Electro or Dubstep music so it’s not for everyone. “Repose” is a 2 minute piece with nothing but clean guitars and vocals. It’s alright but it’s also nothing special. It probably shouldn’t be judged by itself because it most likely serves as an intro to “Happiness”. And finally, “Effect” is pretty ordinary and pales next to the brilliance of the rest of the record. 9 kick ass songs out of 13 isn’t bad if you ask me. I see myself listening to this one for a while.

I should say something about the girls’ performance vocal wise. I’ve always felt that Mina and Shiori’s vocals prior to their first full length album were very strong and beyond reproach. This is something that can clearly be seen in their live performances. It never feels like they’re struggling, even when hitting those high notes, and they have an assurance about their own vocal abilities that comes through in their singing. This was no different on this album. They pretty much share the vocals on the album equally and when they sing together it sounds really powerful. On top of that, the stuff they sing is compelling. It was a treat to hear them sing their heart out song after song.

From a production point of view, it’s quality stuff. The sound engineer and the production team really did their homework. I’ve had a chance to listen to the album on my home theater system with a pair of high-end headphones and it is a feast for the ears. I would even say that the overall sound quality is slightly clearer than Shippu Jinrai.

For the time being it’s difficult for me to say if whether or not I prefer Crest of Evil to their previous releases. As we all know your appreciation of a record can change greatly in time and I still feel like I haven’t completely taken in the album. A few more weeks will probably be sufficient to form a final opinion. For now I can tell you that I’m enjoying it as much as their previous material. Is this worth a purchase? If you’re a fan of their previous stuff, it’s a no-brainer. Get it! You won’t be disappointed. If you’re a fan of Babymetal and looking to discover other similar bands, or just a fan of metal in general, they are definitely worth checking out. Go watch “Parasite” and “CleverDick” on Youtube and listen to their album samples on Amazon Japan, that’ll give you a pretty good idea.

Fruitpochette are on a roll and I can only hope they’ll keep producing quality material like that. A live DVD with a real band backing them up is the next logical step and hopefully this will happen as it would bring them much deserved credibility.
